At the Star club 40th anniversary Roy Young was absolutely brilliant - and he's such a nice guy.
Wes Paul and Roy Young He played Keyboard with Tony Sheridan and also did his own show, he also has a powerful voice. Roy was originally a member of the group 'Cliff Bennet and The Rebel Rousers between 1963-1965, however before this he featured on many of the late 50s rock shows and was leader of the house band at the Star Club. He did some session work for Long John Baldry in 79. Roy also had his own band called 'The Roy Young Band' between 1970 and 1972.
This is a picture I took of Roy backing Tony Sheridan at The Kaiser Kellar. In January 1962 Roy Young accompanied Horst Fascher to Liverpool. They were working for Manfred Weissleder at the time, he was planning to open the Star Club and he was looking for musicians. He offered 'The Beatles' 500 Dm per man and a one off payment of 1000 DM under the table. The contract was to run from April 13 to May 31 '62 (Lewisohn. Chronicle p. 56). The Beatles were to be paid a flat fee of three hundred DM (about 26 pounds) and would not be eligible to receive any royalties from the Tony Sheridan sessions (Flippo, p. 134).

This was truly an amazing show. It opened up at 8.00 p.m. with Scotty Moore and friends - whoa - did I hear you say "Scotty Moore" - Yes I said "Scotty Moore" the one and only - the guy did probably more for music, especially Rock 'n' Roll than any other musician in the world. Scotty featured on all of the original Elvis Presley 'Sun Sessions' as Elvis' Lead guitarist included my all time favourite 'That's All Right Mama'. He was also Elvis' manager and as such he made sure that minimum interference was given to 'his boy' by musicians, Scotty developed his finger pickin style to compensate for the fact that the band only had three musicians... Scotty on lead guitar, Bill Black on double bass and Elvis on ryhthm guitar - anyway it certainly worked... Scotty was accompanied by his friends Victor Gomez, Jimmy Russel & Jay L. Day - vocals were by top German Elvis impersonator John Barron... at 9.00 Ian and The Zodiaks were to take to the stage - It was amazing to see them span the years to reproduce the quality of their original performances. Belting out number after number to background of a screaming hoard of fans.
